RESIZED BeSmartee Blog Feature Josh

As the Director of Information Security at BeSmartee, Joshua Presley is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring security and IT risk management programs within the BeSmartee organization. Joshua has also played an important role in working with external auditing firms to successfully complete a SOC 2 Type 2 audit report for BeSmartee.

Let’s dive in to learn more about Joshua’s 10+ year career in infrastructure and security as well as his interests outside of work.

Q: What is your role at BeSmartee and what has been your favorite project so far?

A: My role within the firm is Director of Information Security. A favorite project, to this point, would be the deployment of New Relic APM across our customer environments, as it gives us greater visibility into performance and reduces our time to resolution on challenges we see within the application stack. Having this capability allows us to better support those we serve and an improved overall customer experience for lenders and borrowers.

Q: How has BeSmartee helped you in your career development and what are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

A: Being a somewhat recent addition to the BeSmartee family, I think it remains to be seen what the impact to career will be. Having spent the last 10+ years in infrastructure and security, I have a clearly established passion for technology and this role has allowed for a continued pursuit of that passion.

With the change in role, there has been a shift in my perspective to be more strategically inclined – looking 1, 3, 5 years into the future, with the decisions we make today having a tangible impact on the future of the business. Another takeaway, I might share, would be that a startup enterprise often requires that you wear any hat on an almost daily basis, if you expect to be successful. A final takeaway here would be to decentralize command wherever possible and empower your team to be effective leaders within their given area of responsibility. This is even more crucial within smaller enterprises, where a lack of depth in teams can create bottlenecks.
